To think, we could've had an arcade quality Pac-Man if it wasn't for Ray Kassar!

@LarcenTyler:

Just months before the release of Pac- Man, back in 1981, I was under the assumption that Pac-Man was going to be a lot like this 8k version.  When the game was finally released for the Atari 2600, my intial response was huh, why?  Marketing implied that I need a newer system, but now we know the truth?  Yeah, I agree, the CEO President, Ray Kassar had a lot to do with the crappy version of Pac-Man.  I do reconize that an 8k game would costs more but would of been a better choice, along with mmore time for development.. The irony to the story, Tod Fry became the first programing employee at Atari to officially became a millionaire for the Pac-Man that got released.  What I got most out of the 1981 Tod Fry Pac-Man along with Atari 2600 Donkey Kong, from Coleco, were the sound bites from those two games had been and are currently used on televisoin shows and movies, awesome!

Ray Kassar was a greedy jackass.  He was in such a rush to cash in on the craze that he figured, 'If it's Pac-Man, it'll sell.'  All while denying Tod Frye the ability to actually make a decent Pac-Man game, instead telling him to finish up the prototype he had and release it as-is.

And why the blue maze? Kassar said 'no black backgrounds unless it's in space!'

I strongly agree, including Ray being a wreckless & greedy bastard.  I believe he drove Atari to the ground.  Nolan Bushnell saw this first and he made a fortune in Atari stock by placing "puts" on his shares. He shared that on a keynote speech in Las Vegas at the CGE 2003.  In the early 80's, when I got Star Raiders for the Atari 2600, I prefer to fly without shields to get the black backgrounds, but it's too hard to play.

 From what I gather, Kassar was afraid to take the potential mass liablity from screen burn in on the common household CRT TVs, (being too overly cautions)?  Even a space game like "Star Raiders" forces the player to play with a blue background?  Of course, "Asteroids" is okay to have black background for all the contionuous screen movment.

What's the story with "Jr. Pac-Man"?  I believe it's a great port. Does Jr. Pacman run on 8k &/or chip enhancement?  How did this game get a black background in 1984?

Oh Yeah, black background because the screen screen continues to move, on "Jr. Pac-Man?

Ray Kassar was fired in late 1982 for insider stock trading.  James Morgan was then named CEO, and he was known for a more casual atmosphere.  He even let programmers put their names on the boxes!

And with the end of Kassar came the end of the no-black backgrounds policy.

Jr. Pac-Man was actually a 16K game.  It was completed in 1984, but video games were put on hold after Jack Tramiel acquired Atari, Inc. (It was then Atari Corporation.) In 1986, with the video game market coming back to life, Tramiel not only released the Atari 7800 finally, but also attempted to revive the Atari 2600 with the red-label cartridges.  Jr. Pac-Man was one of those games.

In regards to the info you shared with me on Jr. Pac-Man, I had no idea.  Thanks!  Who programed Jr. Pac-Man for the Atari 2600?

@DakotaKid:

Says their name is Ava-Robin Cohen.  More than likely an employee of GCC.
