Welcom to High Score.

I have a question. I have quite a few Russian Mega Drive releases. The cartridges are Japanese size, but they are encoded for PAL. What are my options? Will a PAL Asia Mega Drive work for me? I need a system that is 110 volts/60 hrtz.

Voting YES! :)

Hi Mark,

First off -- I'm guessing you're talking about Russian bootleg Mega Drive games, in which case I can't be sure whether or not they're region locked. I don't own any myself. If they're not, then I would suggest using a Game Genie or other such passthrough device to see if the games work on the Mega Drive you already own. If they do, and you have a Jap or USA Mega Drive, then you'll be playing at 60Hz.

If you have a PAL Asian or European Mega Drive, you can play the games regardless of the cartridge size using a passthrough device, or by cutting the plastic tabs in the Mega Drive slot that stop Japanese size games from being inserted. The only problem with this is that you'll be stuck at 50Hz. If you're comfortable modding your Mega Drive, I would recommend this guide:

If the Russian games are locked to the PAL regions, then you'll be stuck at 50Hz either way.

Thanks SHiNjide,

Truth be told, I probably could have gotten a higher score. I don't mean that in a "braggy" way. I think that the only difference between my playthrough and yarjr's was that I went for the Chaos Emeralds and he didn't. They're a chore to get, but the points awarded for just playing through the special stages is grand.

Also, the problem with high scores for Sonic 2 is confounded by the fact that a player could essentially max out their score on either act of Casino Night Zone given enough time. There's objects on the pinball sections that award 500 or so points for passing through them, and given that there's more than enough rings to amass a bunch of lives, a player could simply exploit these pinball sections for whatever score they wanted.

I had fun either way, I suppose that, for now, that's all that matters.

It's an European SNES, but close enough.

Thanks for the welcome!
