In southern Catalonia (Spain), Barcelona is a very beautiful and lively city. There are some other smaller cities like Girona or Cadaqués (City of Salvador Dali) that are interesting. The beaches are numerous and the rocky coast is very beautiful. Otherwise the region is very industrialized or not very interesting (hinterland).
There is also North Catalonia where I live (in France). There is no big city but the beach, the rocky coast, the countryside and the mountains (skiing in winter and trekking in summer) are only an hour away by car. Many southern Catalans come on holiday to northern Catalonia especially for skiing.
