man, Todd Rogers must have played for 40-50 hours at least to score 3.6 million.

@S.BAZ:

I'm actually thinking about going for 1million points.

I've work out it will take roughly 13 hours

So Todd would have been there for days!

@nads:

if he'd scored faster than atari2600forever, maybe 100,000 in 3 hrs, it would still have taken him over 100 hrs.

--??

maybe it's possible he racked up so many extra lives he could take little power-naps like the Asteroids (Arcade) WR holder did.

@S.BAZ:

Still unlikely... The most lives you can have at one time is 9.

I read that someone worked out how to pause.

I guess will never know

hmm  :/

in retrospect it kinda calls into question the referree verification method...

@atari2600forever:

I mean, if you played for 3 hours to score 90k, then it seems reasonable to guess it would take at least 30 hours to score 1million.  --at least 90 hours to score 3million, and another 15hrs at least for another 600k.  so I'm estimating at least 105 hours to score 3,600,000.

as far as I know, no one has been able to marathon for 100+ hours unless they can take little naps without losing all their lives.  Like in Asteroids (Arcade), it's possible to build up many lives and then take a nap while 60 or 80 of your ships get destroyed.

for Pac-Man (2600), as nads pointed out, you can only build up 9 lives.  so there is not enough time to get a nap without reaching Game Over.

Referree verification method means there was no video submitted, no proof exists as a record that 3.6 million points was achieved on this game.  It means a referree watched as the score was achieved so the only verification was this witness at the time it happened.

But now it leaves us to wonder, could this even have been done?  here we are years later with no record to look back at, except a number.   So that's what I meant by questioning the referree verification method.

I figure, either he had a pattern for eating many ghosts & so he was able to build scores much faster, OR he stayed awake ruling Pac-man for at least 4.5 days.

OR if nads is correct & 1million can be accomplished in about 13 hours, then it would only take a couple of days to reach 3.6 million.   A 48 hour marathon is not unheard of.
