For some reason on the second go around I got 10k for shooting the boss when you normally get 300 points. What's that about

Not sure exactly.  Somewhat of an explanation is offered on the original/MAME score here:

'A very large bonus of 10,000 is given for getting through 4 waves and refueling by using exactly 2 shots more than the minimum needed.'

So you must use exactly the number of shoot of all Aliens in the 4 waves + 2 misses.

But then a follow-up post stated this:

Looking at the video, I miss more than 2 times. So there must be some other system behind it aswell. Weird????
