Atari, Inc.'s decision to stick to manufacturing mostly arcade adaptations for the Atari 2600 wasn't a very smart move.

@LarcenTyler:

Back in 1977/1978, the Atari 2600 was able to keep up with arcade adaptations with nearly perfect ports.  For an example, look at the games I listed below:

Arcade 1976 "Sprint 2" by Kee Games ported on 2600 as "Indy 500"

Arcade 1974 "Tank" by Kee Games ported on 2600 as "Combat"

Arcade 1976 "Breakout" by Atari ported on 2600 as "Breakout"

Arcade 1975 "Gun Fight" by Midway ported on 2600 as "Outlaw"

Arcade 1977 "Drag Race" by Kee Games ported on 2600 as "Dragster"

Arcade 1976 "Night Driver" by Atari ported on 2600 as "Night Driver"

Arcade 1978 "Avalanche" by Atari ported on 2600 as "Kaboom!"

Arcade 1977 "Circus" by Exidy ported on 2600 as "Circus Atari"

And many more Arcade games from 1977 or older were ported accurately.  Any arcade game manufactured with newer hardware than the Atari 2600 architecture will soon become too dificult to emulate.  Despite all the success, I bellieve the newer titles like 1978 "Space Invaders" & 1979 "Asteriods", the 2600 was starting to compromise the system's ablitiy to properly port and that continued to get worse every year were Moore's Law definitely applies.  Too little, too late for Atari Inc when Tempest came out for the Atari 2600, hence why it's never got released.

@DakotaKid:

Dragster and Kaboom! were unofficial adaptations by Activision.

Too bad Atari Inc, would not support the racing paddles for Tempest?
